Mandi: Danger of landslide in Parashar lake area, demand for immediate action

MANDI: The serene Parashar Lake area in Mandi district is gradually experiencing a disturbing trend of landslides, raising concerns among local residents and environmentalists. This picturesque place renowned for its beauty and spiritual significance is grappling with the adverse effects of land instability that threatens both its natural landscape and the safety of its residents. Recent reports from locals indicate a marked change in the terrain around Parashar Lake, with ground cracks and soil sliding becoming more pronounced, especially after heavy rainfall. This instability has raised fears of potential landslides that could threaten nearby infrastructure and homes. Four villages downstream, including areas up to Kataula, are at risk. The Baghi Nala, which caused considerable damage last year, including a newly constructed road bridge, is a direct result of these landslides.

Chhape Ram, deputy pradhan of Segli Gram Panchayat, highlighted the gravity of the problem, saying a forest area with 500 plants has slipped from one side and about 1,100 plants are sliding from the other side, which is just 500 metres from the lake. Chhape Ram stressed the need for an immediate assessment to prevent a potential disaster that could lead to huge damage and loss of lives. Balbir Thakur, pradhan of Parashar Devta Mandir Samiti, expressed serious concern over the future of Parashar lake. Thakur said if the landslide problem persists, the lake may burst, leading to heavy flooding. Last year, a flash flood in the Bagi Nallah destroyed about 40 bighas of agricultural land and washed away some houses. It is believed that the flooding problem in the area is increasing due to the frequent landslides. “This situation has also affected the road leading to Parashar lake from Jwalapur, which has caved in,” he said. Environmentalists are worried about the ecological consequences of these landslides. The Parashar lake, which is a popular tourist destination and important habitat for local flora and fauna, is under threat. Experts have warned that continued erosion could lead to poor water quality and disrupt the ecosystem.

Narendra Saini, president of Devbhoomi Paryavaran Rakshak Manch, demanded a thorough probe by the state government to identify the causes of the landslide. Saini pointed to deforestation as a major factor contributing to the problem. Divisional Forest Officer Vasu Dogar said the forest department had last year requested a joint survey by experts from IIT Mandi and soil experts to assess the causes of the landslide and prepare protective measures. However, no report has been received from the deputy commissioner’s office. Darang MLA Puran Chand Thakur Expressing concern over the lack of action, Darang MLA Puran Chand Thakur said the issue was raised in the assembly last year but no action was taken by the state government. Thakur said he would again raise the matter in the next assembly session and seek a solution. As the situation continues to evolve, both residents and environmentalists are demanding immediate action to protect and prevent further damage to the Parashar Lake area.
