Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has decided to cancel the rally planned for Wednesday in protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Siliguri and return to Kolkata. Apart from attending an administrative review meeting, the Chief Minister was also scheduled to lead a mega rally in Siliguri today to protest against the central government’s decision to implement the CAA. However, on Wednesday morning it was announced that the Chief Minister would attend only administrative functions and then return to Kolkata. The rally has been cancelled. The anti-CAA rally in Siliguri was significant in view of the poor performance of Trinamool Congress in North Bengal in the last Lok Sabha elections. Of the eight Lok Sabha seats in North Bengal in 2019, BJP candidates won seven, while the Congress won one seat each. Even Trinamool Congress could not open its account here.
