Patna. In Bihar politics, political discussions have intensified after newly elected independent MLC Banshidhar Brajwasi from Tirhut graduate constituency announced his support to Bharatiya Janata Party. This decision of Brajwasi has sparked a new debate from political circles to social media. Different reactions are emerging regarding his move. Some people are calling it a politically important decision, while others are raising questions linking it to the mandate received as an independent candidate. At the same time, people keeping an eye on the political equations between BJP and Janata Dal United are also deriving different meanings from this development.
Banshidhar Brajwasi, who won as an independent candidate from Tirhut graduate constituency, has given a new topic to the political discussion by announcing his support to BJP. The decision to support a political party after winning an election as an independent candidate is naturally considered important. The impact of such decisions is not limited only to the political role of the concerned leader, but discussions also begin regarding coalition politics and future political equations.
After the announcement of Banshidhar Brajwasi, a series of reactions have started on social media. Some people believe that by supporting BJP he has tried to give a new direction to his political role. On the other hand, some people are raising questions whether supporting a party after winning as an independent candidate is in accordance with the expectations of the voters or not. However, there is no comprehensive and certified survey of voter opinion available in this regard.
The role of Legislative Council is important in the politics of Bihar. Along with the Legislative Assembly, the Legislative Council is also a part of the legislative system in the state. Members of the Legislative Council are elected through various constituencies and prescribed procedures. Members elected from graduate constituencies exclusively represent registered graduate voters. In such a situation, the political decision of the elected representative from Tirhut graduate constituency remains a topic of discussion.
The victory of Banshidhar Brajwasi and the subsequent announcement of support to BJP is being seen from different political viewpoints. Some political observers are considering this as an extension of support for the BJP. While others say that his decision to contest and win the election as an independent candidate should be seen in the context of the election promises and issues put before the voters.
In this entire incident, the political relations between BJP and JDU are also being discussed. In Bihar, both the parties have been allies for a long time at different stages. In coalition politics, differences have emerged from time to time on issues such as seat distribution, candidate selection and political representation. However, it would not be appropriate to consider Brajwasi’s announcement of support as direct evidence of any new dispute between BJP-JDU.
An important aspect of this development is that along with Brajwasi, Rahul Raj, who won the election as an independent from Saran Teachers Constituency, has also joined the BJP. Both the leaders participated in the meeting organized at the BJP office in Patna on Saturday, October 31. The news of both of them joining BJP came to light in the presence of Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary and BJP State President Sanjay Saraogi. However, later Brajwasi clarified that he had supported BJP and not taken membership of the party. For this reason, different claims have emerged regarding their formal membership status.
Banshidhar Brajwasi has won for the second consecutive time in Tirhut graduate constituency. He defeated JDU candidate Abhishek Jha by 9,147 votes. In the year 2024 also, Brajwasi had won the by-election on the same seat as an independent candidate. His political identity has been created due to raising issues related to teacher interests.
Regarding his decision, Brajwasi said that after talking to Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary, he decided to join the BJP. According to him, this will help him in raising issues related to his constituency in a better way. On the other hand, opposition parties have raised questions on taking membership of a political party after winning the election as an independent.
Rashtriya Janata Dal has raised the issue of constitutional provisions in this matter. RJD spokesperson Shakti Singh Yadav termed the joining of independent MLCs as illegal. At the same time, Jan Suraj has also raised the demand for termination of membership of both the members. According to the Tenth Schedule of the Anti-Defection Act, the question of disqualification may arise if an independently elected member joins a political party after election. However, there is a legal distinction between merely supporting a party and taking up formal membership. The final decision on this dispute will be subject to the competent constitutional authority and judicial process.
There have also been signs of dissatisfaction between BJP and JDU regarding this election. JDU candidate Anand Pushkar, defeated on Saran teacher seat, has accused some BJP leaders of not following the coalition dharma. At the same time, after the defeat of JDU candidate on Tirhut graduate seat, questions have been raised about the role of allies. However, these allegations do not confirm any formal alliance crisis between the two parties.
