Red Alert: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert predicting extremely heavy rains in the Ghat areas of central Maharashtra on July 26 (Friday) and July 27 (Saturday). Mumbai and Thane are likely to receive moderate to heavy rains (yellow alert) on Saturday, while Ratnagiri, Raigad, Sindhudurg, Pune and Satara may receive very heavy rains (orange alert). A green alert has been issued for Palghar with the possibility of moderate rains on Saturday. A red alert has also been issued for the Konkan, Goa and Gujarat region on July 26. All 14 crew members of a tugboat that capsized in the Arabian Sea off the Alibag coast in Maharashtra’s Raigad district have been rescued, a police official said on Friday. Over 2,500 people were evacuated from their homes as heavy rains inundated several villages in south Gujarat, officials said on Friday. At least 2,200 people were shifted from villages and low-lying areas in Navsari following heavy rainfall in 24 hours, while 500 people were evacuated from neighbouring Tapi district, they said. “The Purna river passing through Navsari district is flowing at 28 feet, well above the danger mark of 23 feet, due to heavy rains in the district and its upper basin in the last 24 hours,” Navsari Collector Kshipra Agre told reporters here. At least 70 internal roads and four main roads are closed for vehicular traffic due to waterlogging, she said. The district disaster management cell said 500 people were evacuated to shelter homes from villages in Valod taluka due to floods in Tapi district.

Heavy rains swelled the Balganga river in Budha Kedar area of Uttarakhand’s Tehri Garhwal district on Friday and the river water entered houses, inundated fields and damaged roads and bridges, according to state emergency operation data.
