Maharashtra: Pregnant woman walks 6 km from remote village in Gadchiroli to give birth to her child

Maharashtra : A pregnant woman in Gadchiroli died after walking 6 km as her village is cut off from the main road and there is no medical facility for delivery, an official said on Friday. Asha Santosh Kiranga (24), a resident of Aldandi Tola in Etapalli taluka of Gadchiroli district, was nine months pregnant, he said.

“Her village, Aldandi Tola, is cut off from the main road and there are no delivery facilities there. The patient, along with her husband, walked 6 km through forest paths to her sister’s house in Petha on January 1, hoping for timely help. However, the ordeal took a toll on her during her last stage of pregnancy.” The official said, “On the morning of January 2, she started experiencing severe labor pains. She was taken by ambulance to Kali Ammal Hospital in Hedri. Although doctors decided to perform a caesarean section, it was too late. The baby had died in the womb. The woman also died soon after due to high blood pressure.”

When contacted, Gadchiroli District Health Officer Dr. Pratap Shinde said the woman was registered through ASHA workers.

He said, “The sudden labor pains and complications were probably due to walking. Doctors tried to save her, but they were unsuccessful. A detailed report has been sought from the Taluka Health Officer, and the matter will be investigated.”
