Maharashtra Budget 2026 encourages scrapping of BS-IV vehicles

Maharashtra: As part of measures to reduce pollution and promote clean vehicles, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has proposed a Motor Vehicle (MV) tax exemption for those who scrap their old vehicles and purchase new ones.

Owners who scrap vehicles with BS-IV and above emission norms and purchase new vehicles will receive a 16% tax exemption. Those who scrap vehicles with BS-III and below emission norms will receive a 30% discount.

Environment tax on old private vehicles will be doubled. The tax on two-wheelers will increase from ₹2,000 to ₹4,000. The tax on petrol light motor vehicles will increase from ₹3,000 to ₹6,000, while the tax on diesel light motor vehicles will increase from ₹3,500 to ₹7,000. Meanwhile, under the Jan Vishwas Act passed by the state government, the budget proposes punishment instead of jail term under sections 59, 60, 63A and 68A of the Maharashtra Stamp Act, with the penalty being increased from ₹5,000 to ₹1 lakh.
