Ludhiana: The scorching heat has led to the highest sales of air conditioners (ACs) and coolers in May, with the sellers seeing a rapid rise in business and the sales in this month being 100 per cent higher than last year. The scorching heat has led to the sellers seeing a rapid rise in business and the sales in this month being 100 per cent higher than last year. When the temperature in the region touched 47 degrees Celsius, the demand for cooling units reached its highest level, which severely affected the supply chain. Speaking to The Tribune, Raminder Batra of Batra Electronics, located on Ferozepur Road, said, “For example, last year we sold 100 ACs or coolers, this year in May we sold 200. Companies were not able to meet the demand, otherwise the sales would have been even higher. Even those who could not afford to buy coolers bought them in installments due to the soaring temperature.” Local manufacturers too said that this is the best season in terms of sales. Harminder Singh, a cooler manufacturer in Shivpuri area, said people bought coolers in bulk to escape the heat. “They ordered coolers according to their budget. A good fan costs around Rs 2,000, but I would suggest buying a cooler as it costs just Rs 1,000 or Rs 2,000 more,” Singh said. Moreover, there was a flood of complaints this season and repairmen were finding it difficult to attend all the calls. Prince Kumar, who works with a group of three-four boys to service air conditioners, said there was a lot of demand and residents were calling repeatedly for repairs. “Residents often complained that their appliances were not providing optimum cooling. As a result, services were provided and capacitors were replaced to get the desired results,” Prince said.
