Usually, kidney stones do not cause pain until they move into the kidney or pass into the ureter. If the stones are small, they often pass out of the body along with the urine with little or no pain. If they get stuck in the urethra, the pain starts.
These hardened stones block the flow of urine. It also leads to swelling of the kidneys. This causes urethral spasm. It can be very painful. Usually these stones are formed with 85% calcium oxalate.
These pains have nothing to do with the size of the stones. Therefore, it is advisable to consult a doctor if there are symptoms such as less urine but more frequent urination and smell of urine.
