Khammam: The disturbing trend of farmers committing suicide over land-related issues continues in the district. Another farmer attempted suicide in the district on Monday. M. Sitayya, a farmer from Banpuram village in Mudigonda mandal, consumed pesticide over a land dispute, following which he was admitted to a private hospital in Khammam. He is said to have purchased the land of Cheruvu Shikam in Kamalapuram village three years ago. According to his family members, the farmer was planning to take up fish farming, but members of the local fishermen’s society had been objecting to it for some time.
A complaint in the matter was made to the District Collector. On Monday, when the farmer went to work in his field, the society members stopped him, due to which he consumed pesticide in anger. His health condition is not yet known. Notably, a farmer Bojedla Prabhakar of Proddatur in Chintakani mandal committed suicide on June 1 over a dispute over his land. Pachipala Bhadraiah, a farmer of Usirikayalapalli village in Karepalli mandal, attempted suicide on July 4 after former RTI commissioner Shankar Naik allegedly encroached upon his land.
