Khaira: The police are targeting Congress election candidates.

Jalandhar: Bhullath MLA Sukhpal Khaira has leveled serious allegations against the police. He claimed that law enforcement officials in the area are misusing their power to influence the results of the upcoming block committee and zila parishad elections. According to Khaira, several police actions, including the delayed addition of names to FIRs and targeted raids, are creating an atmosphere of fear for Congress candidates and workers. Khaira specifically mentioned an FIR registered in Subhanpur in connection with alleged irregularities during the distribution of flood relief. He stated that this case was registered nearly four months after the incident and asserted that it was politically motivated to prevent opposition candidates from contesting the elections.
The MLA cited an incident on December 4, when Baljinder Singh, in-charge of the Nadala police post, along with his team, raided the house of Congress candidate Gurjit Singh from Block Committee Zone, Chakoke, in the early morning. Khaira said that this raid took place even though Gurjit and others named in the case had already obtained anticipatory bail from the court of Additional Sessions Judge-I, Kapurthala, two days earlier. He emphasized that the court order clearly stated that custodial interrogation was not required as the recovery had been completed. He termed this police action a violation of judicial directives and alleged that it appeared to benefit a political opponent in the area.
Khaira further alleged that more names of Congress leaders and workers, including local office bearers and candidates associated with the party, have recently been added to FIRs. He claimed that these names were added based on statements taken under pressure from a political opponent and expressed apprehension that more names could be added as the election process progresses. Khaira appealed to the State Election Commission to intervene, stating that fair elections are only possible when law enforcement agencies function independently and without any political pressure. They demanded the immediate suspension of SI Baljinder Singh and action against the senior police officers who allegedly supervised the operation, and also sought assurance that candidates would be able to file nominations and campaign without any fear or interference.
