Malappuram: Nilambur MLA P V Anwar on Saturday evening announced the name of his new party – Democratic Movement of Kerala. The development came a day ahead of his public meeting in Manjeri where he is expected to outline his new political policies.
Earlier in the day, Anwar took major steps to remain in the all India alliance by meeting key leaders of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu. He met DMK leader M M Abdullah in Chennai.
The meeting came a day after Anwar’s son P V Rizwan met DMK leader and Electricity Minister V Senthil Balaji. Rizwan and DMK leaders in Kerala facilitated Anwar’s meeting with Abdullah.
Sources close to the MLA said Anwar’s aim was to meet DMK heavyweights M K Stalin or Udhayanidhi Stalin in Chennai. However, it is not clear whether he succeeded in doing so.
‘Party plans to be revealed at Manjeri meeting’
Sources say that the chances of Anwar’s party aligning with Stalin’s party are slim.
E A Suku, a political figure who left the CPM in 2020 and recently allied with Anwar, said, “People will have to wait till the public meeting in Manjeri on Sunday to determine if the party has any connection with Stalin’s party. All plans related to the new party will be revealed at this event and some DMK leaders may also attend it.”
During the public meeting, Anwar is also expected to make clear his intentions about retaining his MLA post while continuing his fight against the CPM with this new party.
Earlier, Anwar had announced that he would reveal the name of his new party at the public meeting. However, Anwar’s unexpected moves, including the announcement of the political party’s name and meetings in Chennai, have fuelled speculations about his future plans.
Sources say Anwar was looking for support from a strong leader within the India Bloc. Anwar believes a person like Stalin would gain more acceptance in Kerala, which is considered a staunch opponent of the RSS and the BJP.
