Karnataka: 19-year-old girl dies of Kyasanur forest disease

Mangaluru: A 19-year-old girl from Hosanagar taluk in Shivamogga district died of the Kyasanur forest disease at a hospital in Manipal, health department sources said.

The girl, hailing from Aramne Koppa village in Shivamogga, was admitted to KMC hospital in Manipal in Udupi district on January 4 after testing positive for KFD. Sources said this is the first death due to this disease this year.

KFD is a viral disease that spreads through feces.

The girl developed fever after being shot at Annalekoppa village on December 26 and was shifted to a private hospital for treatment. Although his condition initially improved, it deteriorated on December 30, following which he was admitted to McGann Hospital in Shivamogga.

It was discovered that he was suffering from meningitis. However, the KFD test came back negative on January 2. Repeat tests on January 4 confirmed the disease and he was shifted to KMC hospital, where Luna succumbed, sources said.
