New Delhi, (IANS) | Wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow will miss the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 as England want him to be fully fit for the Ashes starting June 16.
A report in The Telegraph stated, “When it became clear that he would not be fully fit for the Punjab Kings to start the season on April 1, the franchise has decided that he will not be able to take part in the campaign.” A formal announcement will be made in this regard in the next few days.”
Bairstow did not have a very good performance in IPL 2022. He was able to score only 253 runs in 11 innings at an average of just 23. He suffered a left leg injury on September 2 last year after which he was not part of England’s victorious T20 World Cup campaign in Australia and the Test tours of Pakistan and New Zealand.
Before the injury in 2022, Bairstow had scored six centuries in 10 Tests, including two in the Edgbaston Test against India last year.
Reports suggest that Bairstow could return to playing competitive cricket for the Yorkshire team in Division Two of the County Championship. Although no date has been fixed.
