Jalandhar: Woman killed after being hit near a temple

Jalandhar: Days after a man and his son lost their lives in a hit-and-run accident in Model Town, another fatal accident took place near Devi Talab Mandir late last night. A speeding vehicle crushed a woman, Riya, who was crossing the road in front of the temple. Her eight-year-old son, who was with her at the time, miraculously survived. In the incident captured on CCTV cameras, Riya is seen attempting to cross the road to give alms to a beggar after praying outside the temple, which was closed at the time. Riya, a resident of Neelmahal, was living in a rented house near Gopal Nagar. She had gone to the temple with her children and family members to pray for her husband’s well-being on his birthday. Her husband lives in Poland. The accident occurred at around 00:40 pm when an SUV coming from Doaba Chowk hit Riya and fled from the spot. She died instantly due to the collision. The CCTV footage, which is now being widely circulated, shows the horrific moment when the vehicle hit her while her young son had a narrow escape. SHO Gurmukh Singh of Division No. 8 confirmed that a case has been registered against the unidentified driver. “The vehicle’s registration number 4559 was headed towards Tanda Gate. Raids are being conducted to nab the driver,” he said. Riya’s body was taken to the civil hospital for post-mortem. While the driver is still absconding, police officials claimed that they are actively investigating and the accused will be arrested soon. However, the incident has further fuelled growing concerns over reckless driving in the city, especially in crowded places, where traffic violations are common. Residents have expressed their anger, demanding strict enforcement of road safety measures and harsh penalties for violators.
