Jalandhar: Jalandhar Commissionerate Police has got significant success in the investigation of Sunaina suicide case. She committed suicide by hanging herself from a fan in her house in Jalandhar Cantt on July 10. Sunaina was the wife of former BJP councilor Bharat Atwal alias Jolly. Acting on the complaint of Sunaina’s mother Vandana Devi, Jalandhar Cantt police have registered a case under sections 80 and 3(5) of the BNS Act. Those named in the case include Sunaina’s husband Bharat Atwal, mother-in-law Baby, father-in-law Shobha Ram and sisters-in-law Sonia, Monika, Manisha and Japji Sukh. Police have now arrested Shobha Ram, his wife Baby and Monika. The search for the rest of the accused is on. According to the police, Vandana’s complaint revealed that Sunaina was married to Bharat about eight months ago. Shortly after the marriage, Sunaina’s in-laws allegedly started demanding dowry and started harassing her. Bharat also had an extramarital affair, which added to Sunaina’s troubles. Vandana said that Sunaina took the extreme step due to the stress caused by her husband’s love affair and dowry demands. Sunaina had reportedly told her family about her marital troubles and the stress she was facing. “When she stayed with us a week before her death, she told everything. We wanted to resolve the issue with Jolly and his family, but on the night of July 9, Sunaina called us in distress and asked us to take her back. She had warned that her husband and in-laws might harm her,” Vandana said. Joint Commissioner of Police Sandeep Sharma, while addressing the media, confirmed the arrests and the ongoing efforts to nab the rest of the accused. “After confirming all aspects of the case, an FIR was lodged. The in-laws and a sister-in-law have been arrested and raids are being conducted to arrest others involved,” Sharma said. He also said that the accused had no previous criminal history.
