Jalandhar: The sugar mill’s license has been suspended due to outstanding payments of Rs 28 crore owed to farmers.

Jalandhar: A meeting was held at the SDM office here on Monday between district administration officials, including Deputy Commissioner Amit Kumar Panchal, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gaurav Toora, and SDM Jashanjeet Singh, and leaders of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), Doaba, led by Manjit Singh Rai and Satnam Singh Sahni. The meeting discussed the long-pending sugarcane payments of approximately Rs 28 crore owed to farmers by Golden Sandhar Mills Limited, Phagwara.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Manjit Singh Rai said that the officials have decided that the sugar mill will not be issued a license for the current crushing season until the current mill owners, the Rana Group, give an assurance to clear the farmers’ outstanding payments. Rai said that an agreement was signed at the time of the Rana Group’s acquisition of the sugar mill, under which the firm was to pay 2.5 percent of its annual crushing season profits towards clearing the farmers’ dues. He alleged that the firm has failed to abide by this agreement as it has not cleared the outstanding payments of the sugarcane farmers.
