Jalandhar: On Saturday, Dhanteras, the city’s markets were bustling with shoppers. The rush of customers began early in the morning and continued until late in the evening. All roads were heavily trafficked as the entire city thronged with shoppers. Commuters had to wait patiently for up to an hour to cover a distance that usually takes about 8-10 minutes. Shops selling utensils, jewelry, and automobiles were packed with shoppers. Although the price of 22-carat gold today was ₹1.20 lakh per 10 grams, buyers were undeterred.
A new gold store, Tyaani Jewellery, a brand owned by film director Karan Johar, was inaugurated near Guru Amardas Chowk in Jalandhar today. In addition to small gold jewelry, silver coins were also in demand. Brass utensils were in high demand in the utensils market. Automobile companies, which had already received a good response from buyers since the beginning of Navratri and the reduction in GST slabs, saw another surge in sales. Gurinder Pal Singh, owner of an automobile showroom, said, “This Dhanteras saw record sales. It seemed as if everyone was waiting for this auspicious occasion to make purchases and also avail the GST reduction. We expect cross-billing of 500 scooters by the time the showroom closes in the evening.”
