Jalandhar: ‘Mahaan Kosh’ by Language Department is unavailable in Mela Ghadri Babeyan Da

Jalandhar: The recently concluded three-day fair, “Ghadri Babaiyan Da,” at the Desh Bhagat Yadgar Hall, drew a large crowd, with book stalls being the main attraction. Visitors flocked to view and purchase some of the finest books in Punjabi literature. However, many book lovers were disappointed as they were unable to find copies of the renowned Punjabi encyclopedia “Mahan Kosh,” written by Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha and published by the Language Department. Although the District Language Department had set up its stall at the fair, many visitors inquiring about the book were told that no copies were available. The Tribune previously reported on the shortage of this prestigious reference book, which remains out of stock.

According to department sources, “Mahan Kosh” has not been reprinted since 2019, when 10,000 copies were published. Previously, the eighth reprint of the book, in 2011, saw a circulation of over 5,000 copies. This 1,250-page tome is a rich source of Punjabi heritage, including rare maps of India and Lahore, as well as historical photographs that are hard to find elsewhere. Book lovers and scholars have long demanded a reprint of this encyclopedia, as it holds immense value as a comprehensive guide to Punjabi language and culture. Another book, “Punjab,” edited by Mohinder Singh Randhawa, was also in high demand during the fair, having been unavailable for many years due to its lack of reprints. Literature lovers expressed hope that the Language Department will soon reprint these iconic works, ensuring their availability to both readers and researchers.
