Jalandhar: JE of Education Department caught taking bribe of Rs 4,000

Jalandhar: In its campaign against corruption, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has arrested Harjeet Singh, a junior engineer (JE) of the education department posted in Kapurthala, red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 4,000. A VB spokesperson said the accused was arrested following a complaint from a teacher posted at a government school in Dhaliwal Dona, Kapurthala district.

He further stated that the complainant had approached the VB alleging that the accused had demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000 for issuing a completion certificate for a Rs 40 lakh grant utilized by the school. The accused JE had already taken Rs 2,000 for the bribe and demanded the remaining amount. The complainant recorded the conversation with the JE during the bribe demand and submitted it to the VB as evidence.

The spokesperson said that after a preliminary investigation into the complaint, the Vigilance Bureau team laid a trap and arrested the accused junior engineer red-handed while accepting a second installment of a bribe of Rs 4,000 from the teacher in the presence of two government witnesses. A case has been registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act at the Jalandhar Range police station of the Vigilance Bureau. The accused will be produced in court tomorrow, and further investigation is underway.
