Jalandhar: A disturbing incident has come to light from Banga in the SBS Nagar district. A Punjab Police head constable is accused of shooting and killing his sister’s husband and injuring a neighbor just after midnight. The incident occurred in Sotra Colony on Municipal Council Road, spreading fear and panic in the area. Police confirmed that the accused fled the scene after the shooting and a case has been registered against him. Banga Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Harjeet Singh, said that an FIR has been registered against the accused, Head Constable Mandeep Singh, under sections 302 and 307 of the Indian Penal Code. Confirming the matter, SP (D) Sarabjit Singh Bahiya said that the case was registered based on a complaint from the accused’s sister, Manjeet Kaur. She alleged that her brother came to her house drunk, vandalized two vehicles, created panic, and started abusing family members, after which she ran upstairs in fear. Hearing the noise, neighbors gathered at the house.
During the commotion, the accused allegedly shot Gurpreet Singh, alias Gopi, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his head and upper body. He was rushed to the hospital where doctors declared him dead. A woman from the neighborhood, Archana, was also shot in the right knee and admitted to Dhahan-Kalera Hospital, where her condition is stated to be stable. Tushar Gupta, Senior Superintendent of Police, SBS Nagar, said the accused head constable has been suspended and a search operation is underway to locate him. Police’s initial assessment suggests that a domestic dispute and long-standing family tension may have led to the violent incident. The deceased worked as a physiotherapist in Garhshankar and is survived by his wife and three children. Police said further investigations are underway and efforts are being made to arrest the accused as soon as possible.
