Jalandhar: A massive fire broke out at a fast-food shop called Veg Parlor in Guru Bazaar, Goraya, on Wednesday morning, causing losses worth several lakhs. According to the shop owner, Mani, smoke suddenly began pouring from the shop shortly after 8 a.m. Seeing the situation, people nearby immediately alerted Ward Councilor Professor Rishu, who alerted the Phillaur Fire Brigade and requested a fire tender. Before the fire brigade arrived, the neighborhood tried to control the fire on their own, but the flames continued to grow rapidly. Firefighters eventually extinguished the fire, but by then the kitchen above the shop had been completely gutted. All the kitchen utensils were reduced to ashes, although a gas cylinder in the kitchen and another cylinder below the shop remained intact. Three more cylinders were stored inside the shop at the time of the incident. The cause of the fire is still unknown. Rishu expressed sympathy for the shop owner and criticized the city fire service for not reaching the shop in time. He said that although a fire tender has been provided for Goraya—its operational expenses are borne by the city council—the vehicle is parked at the Phillaur fire station, delaying response times. He added that if the fire tender had arrived on time, the damage could have been minimized. Rishu said he would raise the issue at the council meeting and insist that a fire tender be permanently stationed in Goraya to ensure a prompt response to emergencies.
