Jalandhar: Drug smuggling gang busted, 3 kg opium seized

Jalandhar: Jalandhar Commissionerate Police has achieved a significant success by busting an international drug smuggling gang and seizing 3 kg opium. Commissioner Swapan Sharma informed that three persons involved in smuggling and packaging of opium for international distribution have been arrested. He informed that on November 24, the CIA team arrested Chahat, a resident of New Sant Nagar, Bhargo Camp, Jalandhar, at Mata Rani Chowk. During the arrest, 1 kg opium was seized from him, he said, adding that an FIR (No. 114) has been registered at Bhargo Camp Police Station under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Further interrogation led to the identification of two accomplices, Pawan Kumar and Ranbir Singh, who were arrested the same day. Police seized an additional 2 kg opium from them. The gang is suspected to smuggle the drugs abroad by packing them in parcels. Commissioner Sharma also informed that Section 29 of the NDPS Act has also been added in the case and a thorough investigation is underway to unearth the forward and backward links of the gang. Officers are working to identify other persons involved in the illegal operations and make further recoveries. Notably, Pawan Kumar has a criminal record, with two FIRs registered against him under the NDPS Act earlier this year. However, the other two accused have no previous criminal history.
