Jalandhar: A heavy gunfight broke out between CIA staff of Commissionerate Police and drug smugglers in Lajpat Nagar area on Wednesday evening, leading to the arrest of one smuggler and seizure of one kilogram of heroin. The operation was the result of a well-coordinated intelligence operation led by Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma. He said they had reports indicating that two smugglers belonging to a Pakistan-based drug network had come to the city to deliver a large consignment of heroin. Acting on this information, they laid a trap to nab the suspects.
He said as the officers got close to the smugglers, a gunfight broke out. The smugglers opened fire, forcing the police to retaliate. “During the exchange of fire from both sides, we managed to arrest one suspect,” Sharma said. The arrested person sustained injuries, though it is not clear whether these injuries were caused by the gunfight or other reasons, such as falling or being hit by a vehicle during the pursuit. The injured suspect has been admitted to the civil hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, the second suspect managed to escape from the spot but has been identified and the police are actively trying to nab him. An FIR has been registered under the NDPS Act and detailed investigation is underway. Further information, including the identity of the suspects and additional details about the operation, is expected to be released during a press conference tomorrow, police officials said.
