Jalandhar: Bahra Charitable Trust’s 43-year journey of transforming lives and providing healing

Jalandhar: For over four decades, SPS Bahra Memorial Hospital and S. Lakha Singh Bahra Charitable Trust, Chachoki, Phagwara, have been setting an example in social service by combining healthcare with compassion and education with opportunity. From providing scholarships to needy students to providing affordable and free medical treatment, the Trust has emerged as a support for the underprivileged. Established in 1982 with the aim of empowering youth through education, the Trust has so far provided scholarships to 2,251 poor, meritorious, and deserving students from schools and colleges. Operating since 1993, the hospital offers affordable healthcare at an OPD fee of just ₹80 and serves over 150 patients daily.
Economically weaker sections are regularly given discounts on their medical bills, while 46 patients at the Birdh Ashram in Virk receive free treatment, including OPD fee waivers. Similarly, students at the Government Primary and Girls’ High School, Chachoki, receive free treatment during medical emergencies during school hours. The institution also alleviates the burden of medical expenses by offering a 10 percent discount on all medicines purchased from its pharmacy. In the field of eye care, the Trust has made significant contributions since the establishment of its eye care unit in 2009. A total of 52 free eye camps have been organized, examining 24,923 patients, and 4,259 patients underwent successful eye surgeries. Diagnostic and treatment services at the hospital are accessible to the common man, with rates such as ₹150 for a digital X-ray and ₹150 for an ECG—significantly lower than prevailing market prices.
Specialist units in gynecology, medicine, ophthalmology, and dentistry are also available at minimal cost, along with advanced facilities such as air-conditioned private rooms, a computerized laboratory, and an air-conditioned ambulance service. A unique aspect of the Trust’s functioning is that all trustees provide honorary services, ensuring that every resource is directed solely towards patient welfare and community service. Highlighting these initiatives, Trust Secretary Sarup Singh Bansal told The Tribune that the hospital is not merely a medical institution, but a mission to serve humanity. He said, “Our aim has always been to help the poor and needy, whether through scholarships for education or affordable treatment during times of illness.” Through their continuous efforts, SPS Bahra Memorial Hospital and S Lakha Singh Bahra Charitable Trust embody the spirit of service and reaffirm the belief that healthcare and education are not privileges, but rights that should reach even the most marginalized sections of society.
