Jalandhar: A case of immigration fraud has surfaced in Kapurthala district, where a travel agent allegedly swindled a young man out of Rs 13.50 lakh. The agent had promised to send him to Spain but failed to do so. Following a complaint from the victim’s father, the police have registered a case of fraud against the accused travel agent. The accused has not yet been arrested. According to the complaint, Gurdev Singh, a resident of Khera Dona village in Kapurthala, stated that he wanted to send his son, Taranveer Singh Khera, abroad for employment. He came into contact with Happy Khanna, a resident of Talwandi Madho village in the Shahkot area of Jalandhar district, who identified himself as a travel agent. The accused allegedly claimed to have sent several people abroad previously and assured the family that Taranveer would be sent to Spain.
Based on these assurances, an agreement was reached, and the complainant handed over Rs 13.50 lakh along with documents to the accused in the name of visa processing, documentation, and other related expenses. However, despite repeated follow-ups, neither was Taranveer sent to Spain nor were the funds returned. When the accused allegedly stopped giving satisfactory responses, the family approached the police for legal action. Police officials stated that an initial inquiry was conducted based on the complaint, which corroborated the allegations. Subsequently, an FIR was registered against Happy Khanna. The police said that efforts are underway to trace the accused, and further action will be taken based on the investigation’s findings. Authorities have once again urged the public to exercise caution while dealing with travel agents and to verify their credentials before engaging in any financial transactions.
