Jalandhar: A fatal road accident occurred late at night on the Phagwara bypass near Mehta Chowk in Phagwara, resulting in one death and one injury. According to the police complaint filed by Deepak Sharma, a resident of Pathankot, the complainant was traveling from Chandigarh to Pathankot. He was accompanied in the car by Surinder Singh, Sameer Sharda (who was driving), and 32-year-old Pankaj Kumar, also a resident of Pathankot.
The complainant stated that due to heavy fog, they were driving cautiously on their correct side of the road. As they reached Phagwara, a vehicle ahead suddenly applied its brakes, causing damage to the conductor’s side of their car. As they stopped to assess the damage, a speeding truck approached from behind. The truck driver allegedly neither honked nor slowed down and rammed into their stationary car from behind. The collision caused the truck to lose control and overturn near the flyover crossing.
Pankaj, who was standing near the car, was hit by the truck and died on the spot. Sharda sustained injuries in the incident. With the help of the police, Pankaj’s body was recovered from under the truck and later taken to the Civil Hospital in Phagwara, where it was placed in the mortuary. However, the truck driver fled the scene after the accident. Police stated that the accident occurred due to the truck driver’s speeding and negligent driving, which posed a serious threat to public safety. A case has been registered, and efforts are underway to trace and apprehend the absconding driver.
