Ishan Kishan returns to the nets ahead of the fourth T20; Vaibhav’s spot at risk

Sports: The fourth match of the five-match T20 International series between India and New Zealand will be played on Friday, October 30, at Eden Park Stadium in Auckland. Ahead of this crucial encounter, there is some encouraging news for the Indian cricket team: wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, who missed the last two T20 matches due to injury, participated in a practice session and batted in the nets. This has sparked excitement among cricket fans regarding the possibility of his return. With India already holding an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series, discussions surrounding Ishan’s fitness and the potential playing XI for the fourth match have intensified. However, his appearance in the nets does not necessarily mean he has been declared fully fit to play in the match.
Ishan Kishan’s net session raises hopes
Amidst preparations for the fourth T20 match in Auckland, Ishan Kishan’s batting practice is being viewed as a positive sign for the Indian team. Ishan is an aggressive left-handed batter capable of scoring runs quickly in T20 cricket; he can play big shots during the powerplay and also perform a valuable role in the middle order. His return to the nets suggests that his recovery from injury is progressing well. Nevertheless, his availability for the match will depend on clearance from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) medical team. The team management is unlikely to take the risk of fielding a player who is not fully fit—especially given that India has already secured the series.
Ishan Kishan sustained an injury during the first T20 match
Ishan Kishan suffered an injury during the first T20 International against New Zealand, held in Christchurch on October 22. According to the BCCI, he sustained a minor strain in the muscle of his inner right thigh. In medical terms, this is referred to as a low-grade right adductor strain. Due to this injury, Ishan was unable to participate in the second T20 match held on October 24. Subsequently, he was also sidelined for the third T20 match, which took place in Wellington on October 27.
On October 26, the BCCI reported that while Ishan was recovering well, he had not yet attained full match fitness. The medical team is continuously monitoring his condition.
The Indian team has already won the series.
India has delivered an impressive performance in the ongoing T20 series against New Zealand. By winning the first three matches, Team India has secured an unassailable 3-0 lead. The first T20 match was held in Christchurch on October 22, where the Indian team chased down a stiff target of 226 runs to clinch an exciting four-wicket victory. India also won the second match by four wickets. Following this, the team secured a six-wicket win in the third T20 match in Wellington on October 27, sealing the series. India will now aim to win the remaining two matches to complete a 5-0 clean sweep against New Zealand.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s stellar performance adds to selection dilemmas.
In the absence of Ishan Kishan, young batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi was given an opportunity in the Indian side. Vaibhav has caught the attention of both the team management and cricket fans with his aggressive batting style. In the third T20 match in Wellington, he played a brilliant innings of 45 runs off just 19 balls. During this knock, he partnered with Abhishek Sharma to provide the Indian team with a rapid start. The two batters forged a 118-run partnership during the powerplay, putting immense pressure on the New Zealand bowlers. Given this performance, it will not be easy for the team management to alter the batting order for the fourth T20. It will be interesting to see where Ishan Kishan might fit into the batting lineup should he return to full fitness.
Abhishek Sharma’s explosive batting in the spotlight
Indian opener Abhishek Sharma has been in excellent form throughout the current series. In the third match held in Wellington, he scored a century off just 35 balls, creating significant trouble for the New Zealand bowlers. His aggressive approach ensured that the Indian team maintained constant pressure while chasing the target. Abhishek’s stellar form, combined with the performance of Vaibhav Suryavanshi, has bolstered India’s top order. Meanwhile, players like Sanju Samson, captain Shreyas Iyer, and Tilak Varma provide further balance to the side. Consequently, Ishan’s potential return could lead to adjustments in the Indian batting order.
Possible changes to the playing XI for the fourth T20
With India having already secured the series, some changes might be seen in the fourth match. The team management could provide opportunities to players who did not feature in the first three encounters. There will also be interest in whether spinners like Varun Chakaravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav are included. Ultimately, the final composition of the Indian side will depend on the pitch conditions at Auckland, the weather, and the fitness of the players. The most critical question regarding Ishan Kishan concerns his match fitness; if the medical team declares him fully fit, he could be available for selection. However, any official changes will only be confirmed when the playing XI is announced at the time of the toss.
Batters may benefit at Eden Park
Auckland’s Eden Park is among the most renowned cricket grounds in the world. Due to the relatively short boundaries here, one can expect to see big shots in T20 matches. This ground offers plenty of scoring opportunities for batters, while fast bowlers can find swing with the new ball.
