Investigation into damage to Washington Reflecting Pool, Trump warns of strict action

Washington: US President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday (local time) that the Washington-based Reflecting Pool is now in good condition and that six or seven individuals are being investigated for recently damaging it. He made these remarks while speaking to reporters alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

Trump noted that there is no water leakage in the pool and that further repairs will be carried out following the US Independence Day celebrations on July 4. Describing the incident as serious, he stated that action is being taken against those involved and that investigative agencies possess relevant photographs and other evidence.

President Trump said, “The pool is in very good condition, but some people tried to damage it. I have been told that six people have been arrested and six or seven individuals are under investigation.” He further alleged that these individuals breached security measures to reach the base of the pool and damaged the specialized material installed there.

According to Trump, the material used in the pool is highly expensive and unique; it resembles rubber but is distinct from it. He stated that the accused attempted to cut and tear it away using sharp instruments, such as box cutters or razors.

He also remarked that the act was deliberate, describing it as the work of “mentally deranged” individuals. Trump alleged that the edges of the pool—specifically the area where the water level sits—were also damaged with razors.

The President stated that the structure was previously beautiful and secure, and is currently being restored to that same state. He also claimed that video and photographic evidence recovered from the perpetrators is aiding the ongoing investigation.

In this context, Trump recalled that he had previously signed a law mandating up to 10 years in prison for individuals who damage federal property. He stated that the law aims to ensure the protection of public property and prevent such incidents. Investigative agencies are currently conducting a thorough probe into the matter, attempting to determine the actual motive behind the damage and identify any other potential accomplices.

This incident comes at a time when security measures at public sites in the US capital have already been heightened. Officials have indicated that strict action will be taken against the perpetrators once the investigation concludes.

Meanwhile, the administration has initiated the process of repairing the Reflecting Pool and further strengthening security arrangements to ensure there are no disruptions during upcoming national events.
