UTTARAKHAND: A significant step has been taken to address the escalating incidents of landslides on the Mussoorie highway. The government has entrusted the Uttarakhand Landslide Mitigation and Management Center (ULMC) with the responsibility of conducting a scientific survey of five vulnerable areas, including ‘Paniwala Bend’. The objective of this survey is to identify the root causes of the landslides and devise long-term solutions.
According to government officials, there are several locations along the Mussoorie route where recurring landslides during the monsoon disrupt traffic and pose a threat to traveler safety. ‘Paniwala Bend’, in particular, is considered a highly sensitive zone, witnessing annual incidents of road subsidence and debris falling from the hillsides.
A team of experts from the ULMC will conduct a detailed study covering geological structure, slope stability, drainage systems, soil quality, and the impact of rainfall. Through modern techniques—such as drone mapping, geotechnical investigations, and scientific analysis—they will determine the causes behind the frequent landslides and explore ways to prevent them permanently.
Based on the survey report, the government will strengthen safety measures at these vulnerable locations. These measures may include slope stabilization, construction of retaining walls, improved drainage systems, rock bolting, installation of wire mesh, and other engineering interventions. The goal is to minimize future road closures and ensure the safety of travelers.
The Mussoorie highway is one of the state’s most important tourist routes, used by lakhs of tourists and locals every year. Consequently, frequent landslides not only disrupt traffic but also impact tourism and the local economy.
Experts believe that adopting permanent solutions based on scientific study—rather than relying solely on temporary repairs—can significantly mitigate the landslide problem. This government initiative is considered crucial for road safety and disaster management. The administration has appealed to the public to follow official weather and traffic advisories while traveling in hilly areas during the monsoon and to exercise extra caution in vulnerable zones.
