Indigo’s order for 500 Airbus aircraft a milestone for the industry: Scindia

New Delhi (IANS) | Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Tuesday termed Indigo Airlines’ order for 500 Airbus A320 aircraft as another milestone in the country’s aviation industry. Addressing the media here, Scindia expressed enthusiasm over the “unprecedented” order. He announced, India has once again set another milestone in the aviation industry.

IndiGo’s order for 500 aircraft from a single manufacturer is unique, cementing its position as a leader in the aviation sector, he said. This important decision will not only revolutionize the domestic aviation market but will also have a profound impact on the economy of our country.

Scindia emphasized on the economic benefits that the civil aviation industry would bring to the country. He said, earlier Air India had placed orders for 470 aircraft and now Indigo. Every dollar invested in civil aviation creates new opportunities for growth and employment and generates $3.1 in profit.

He said, for every direct job in civil aviation, 6.1 indirect jobs are created in this sector. This highlights the immense dividends accruing from the ever-growing civil aviation sector.

IndiGo’s order includes a combination of A320neo, A321neo and A321XLR aircraft, which will be delivered to the company between 2030 and 2035.

The purchase agreement was finalized at the Paris Air Show 2023, in which representatives of IndiGo and Airbus were present on Monday.

IndiGo said in a statement on Monday that the engine selection and the exact mix of A320 and A321 aircraft would be decided in due course.

IndiGo, currently operating a fleet of over 300 aircraft, already has backlog of orders for 480 aircraft, which are expected to be delivered by the end of this decade.

With this new firm order for 500 aircraft in the 2030-2035 time frame, IndiGo now has nearly 1,000 aircraft on its order-book, ensuring consistent deliveries over the next decade.
