India’s coal production increased by 6.48 percent to 384 metric tonnes

Business.Business: Coal production in India reached 384.08 million tonnes (MT) in the current fiscal till August, up 6.48 per cent from 360.71 MT in the same period of FY24, the government said on Monday. According to the Ministry of Coal, Coal India Limited’s (CIL) production during the April-August period rose to 290.39 MT, up 3.17 per cent from 281.46 MT in the same period last year. Coal production from captive and other entities also witnessed a significant increase, reaching 68.99 MT from April to August – up 30.56 per cent from 52.84 MT during the same period last year. Coal production has grown steadily over the last four years from 730.9 million tonnes in 2019-20, according to official data. Meanwhile, cumulative coal dispatch in FY20 witnessed a significant increase to 412.07 MT (provisional) till August as compared to 391.93 MT in the same period of FY20, registering a commendable growth of 5.14 per cent. CIL dispatched 309.98 MT of coal during the period under review, an increase of 1.51 per cent compared to 305.37 MT dispatched during the same period last year. Additionally, captives and other entities recorded dispatch of 76.95 MT of coal, showing a significant growth of 31.48 per cent as compared to 58.53 MT of coal dispatched during the same period last year.This growth highlights the enhanced logistics capability of the sector and commitment to ensure stable supply of coal, the ministry said. India’s coal production grew 11.7 per cent to a record high of 997.83 million tonnes in the fiscal year ended March 31.The government is pushing to increase domestic production of energy to eliminate unnecessary coal imports in the country.During the period under review, shipments registered a growth of 1.51 per cent as compared to shipments of 305.37 MT during the same period last year.Additionally, captives and other entities recorded dispatch of 76.95 MT of coal, showing a significant growth of 31.48 per cent as compared to 58.53 MT of coal dispatched during the same period last year. The ministry said the increase highlights the sector’s enhanced logistics capacity and commitment to ensuring stable supply of coal.
