New Delhi: America has once again appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India to work towards ending the war between Ukraine and Russia. For this, America has cited the good relations between PM Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Earlier, during PM Modi’s visit to Russia, America had also made a similar appeal to India. The war has been going on on the border of Ukraine for more than two years. America says that if India wants, it can persuade Putin to stop the war.
During a press briefing, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said, “Everyone knows that India’s relationship with Russia is strong. Speaking on behalf of America, we have encouraged India to use its good relations with Russia in the right direction. India has every opportunity to ask President Putin to end the war started by him and find a lasting peace solution in this war. Modi can ask Vladimir Putin to respect the United Nations Charter and the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.” Miller further said that India is an important partner for the US in dealing with Russia.
Earlier, a similar statement came from the White House spokesperson last week. The White House press secretary had said that if India wants, it can stop the war by requesting President Putin. The US has repeatedly stressed that only Putin can end the war going on in Ukraine because he is the one who started it.
The recent statement of the US comes a few days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent two-day visit to Moscow. PM Modi had reached Russia for the first time since the Ukraine war started. During this, the PM had expressed concern about the impact of the war on the Global South during his meeting with President Putin and expressed hope for peace from Putin on this matter. Prime Minister Modi has also assured Russia and international partners of India’s unwavering support for any peace effort.
