IMD warns of ‘high sea waves’ in Mumbai till Sunday; check safety advisory

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued a notice on Saturday advising people to avoid entering the Arabian Sea due to high tide expected till Sunday night.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian National Center for Ocean Information (INCOIS), “bumpy waves” will be seen in the sea from 11.30 am on Saturday to 11.30 pm on Sunday, the civic body said.

It has been said that during this period the height of the waves will increase by 0.5 to 1.5 meters.

BMC has also urged fishermen to be cautious.

BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagarin has directed civic staff to work with the police, and beach security guards in the city have been tasked with preventing people from entering the sea.

As reported by Hindustan Times, INCOIS said in its bulletin, “It is predicted that high-energy swell waves will dominate the nearshore area of the sea, and low-lying surge (sea water in these nearshore areas) will be dominated by increase in) may be experienced. Beach area) remained closed during 11:30 hours (IST) of 04-05-2024 to 23:30 hours (IST) of 05-05-2024 due to combined effect of swell waves of high duration (16-22 seconds). -Standing, being 0.5 – 1.5 meters in height, especially during high tide and spring tide phases.”

Small vessels can sail close to the coast with due caution. Boats should be parked at an appropriate distance from each other to avoid collision and damage. Operating/recreational activities on or near the beach with proper care.
