Odisha: The Hirakud Dam in Sambalpur is experiencing a steady rise in water levels due to continuous rainfall and increased inflows from upstream catchments. The dam’s water level rose to 614.47 feet on Friday morning. To control the rising water level and maintain a safe level, water is being continuously released from 10 sluice gates.
According to data released by the Water Resources Department at 6 a.m. Friday, the Hirakud Reservoir recorded an inflow of 85,108 cusecs of water. Meanwhile, 181,500 cusecs of water is being released downstream from the dam to maintain the water level. According to officials, the reservoir’s status is being monitored around the clock, and water discharge will be adjusted as needed.
The water released from the dam is moving through various barrages and river channels of the Mahanadi river system, causing the river’s water level to rise. According to the Water Resources Department, 85,774 cusecs of water is being released into the Mahanadi River from the Jobra Barrage, while 65,453 cusecs of water is being released into the Kathajodi River from the Naraj Barrage.
Similarly, the discharge at Mundali was recorded at 146,547 cusecs. This data indicates that adequate water continues to flow into the Mahanadi system, and water levels in various parts of the river are being continuously monitored.
Officials clarified that the decision to release water from the Hirakud Dam is based solely on scientific assessment and real-time data. Discharge is regularly controlled based on the inflow of water into the reservoir, weather forecasts, rainfall conditions in the upper catchment areas, and the capacity of the downstream areas.
The Water Resources Department states that the situation is currently under control and water discharge is being carried out in a planned manner to avoid flash floods in the lower reaches. Despite this, the department has appealed to the public to remain vigilant.
The administration has especially advised those living along the Mahanadi and its tributaries to remain alert. Officials have warned that the water level could rise suddenly, so people should avoid unnecessary visits to the river banks, bathing, fishing, or other activities. People have also been urged to follow the guidelines issued by the administration and local authorities.
The water released from the dam could also affect the districts located downstream of the Mahanadi. Consequently, district administrations and disaster management teams are continuously monitoring the situation. Surveillance has been increased in vulnerable areas, and arrangements have been made for rapid relief and rescue operations if necessary.
It is noteworthy that monsoon rainfall has intensified in many parts of Odisha in recent days, increasing the inflow of water into rivers and reservoirs. The Meteorological Department has predicted continued rainfall in some areas in the coming days. Consequently, the Water Resources Department is exercising extra caution regarding reservoir operations.
Experts say that water management at the Hirakud Dam is crucial during the monsoon season. Failure to release a controlled amount of water in a timely manner can increase pressure on the reservoir, while excessive releases can lead to flooding in downstream areas. Therefore, all water release operations are conducted in accordance with scientific standards and weather forecasts.
The administration has appealed to the public to ignore rumors and rely only on official information. They have also advised them to immediately contact the local administration, police, or disaster management department in case of any emergency.
Currently, the situation at the Hirakud Dam is being continuously monitored. Water level, inflow, and outflow data are being regularly evaluated to ensure timely response to potential floods. The administration states that if there are any significant changes in weather conditions or if an increase in water release volume is required, information will be released promptly.
Amidst the rising water levels, the administration’s priority is to ensure the safety of the reservoir as well as the safety of people living in the lower reaches of the Mahanadi. For this purpose, the work of drainage is being continued in a controlled and phased manner.
