Himachal Pradesh: Keeping a strict vigil on overloading of vehicles as well as other traffic violations, Himachal Pradesh Police has fined 570 violators in the first week of the 15-day special campaign aimed at promoting road safety and curbing violations. According to the police, 5,215 vehicles were inspected during surprise checks and blockades and 570 cases of violations were detected. Of these, 365 cases were related to overloading of passengers in public transport, 52 cases of overloading in commercial vehicles, 45 cases of unsafe goods transportation, 38 cases of driving without permit, 34 cases of driving without insurance and 26 cases of illegal passenger transportation in goods vehicles. Additional Superintendent of Police, Traffic Tourism and Railways, Narveer Singh Rathore said that the state police, led by Director General of Police Atul Verma, had launched the 15-day special campaign to promote road safety and curb traffic violations. The campaign will continue till December 2. He said, “The main objective of this initiative is to control overloading in vehicles, unsafe transportation of goods and illegal passenger transportation in goods carriers.” He said the campaign aims to ensure safety of citizens by curbing unsafe transport practices, minimise damage to roads due to overloading and strictly enforce traffic rules to prevent accidents and loss of life and property. He said, “The targeted violations include overloading in commercial vehicles, transportation of goods beyond permissible limits, overloading of passengers in public transport vehicles and illegal passenger transportation in goods vehicles.” District Superintendents of Police and Railway Police have been directed to formulate effective strategies for the campaign by conducting inspections and taking immediate action against the violators, as well as reviewing the progress of the campaign on a daily basis. The police have also appealed to all citizens and vehicle operators to follow traffic rules.
