Himachal: Prisoners showed their talent in exhibition

Himachal Pradesh: A four-day exhibition-cum-sale of products prepared by inmates of various state jails was inaugurated by Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services SR Ojha at the historic Gaiety Theatre. The event showcased the artistic skills and craftsmanship of the inmates, offering a variety of handmade products to the visitors. The exhibition showcased a wide range of items, including intricately designed furniture such as tables, chairs and wooden temples. Handloom products such as shawls, stoles, mufflers and other textile materials woven using traditional techniques are also on display. Additionally, visitors can also see tailoring items such as jackets for men and kurtas for women, reflecting the tailoring skills acquired by the inmates. A special section is dedicated to bakery products, where visitors can buy biscuits, pastries and other delicacies made by the inmates. These bakery products have impressed both locals and tourists, providing a unique opportunity to support the rehabilitation efforts of inmates while enjoying high-quality goods. Speaking to the media, Ojha emphasised the importance of skill development for prisoners under the “Har Hath Ko Kaam” initiative. “The exhibition highlights the creative abilities of prisoners, who have worked hard to create these handmade products. This initiative not only helps them earn a livelihood while serving their sentence, but also prepares them for a productive life after release,” he said. Sharing his experience, Guddu, an inmate of Model Central Jail, Kanda, said, “I learnt carpentry in jail, which helped me earn a livelihood. Every day, we make furniture, which is always in demand. Through this work, I am able to earn around Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000 every month.” With around 2,800 prisoners, both undertrials and convicts, lodged in 14 jails across the state, the Directorate of Prisons and Correctional Services is committed to providing meaningful rehabilitation opportunities. Ojha said, “We invite the people of Shimla and visiting tourists to visit this exhibition, which not only showcases the talents of prisoners but also gives them an opportunity to rejoin society as skilled individuals. This exhibition is a testimony to the potential for reform and reintegration, proving that with proper training and opportunities, prisoners can make positive contributions to society.”
