A second international stadium could be built in Chennai.
Chennai. In view of the growing popularity of cricket in Tamil Nadu and the rising demand for international matches, preparations may soon begin to construct another international cricket stadium in Chennai. J. Srinivasraj, President of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA), stated that the association met with Chief Minister Joseph Vijay and requested the construction of a second international cricket stadium in Chennai with a seating capacity of 50,000. He mentioned that the Chief Minister responded positively to the proposal and asked the association to prepare a detailed plan.
Speaking to the media on Saturday, TNCA President J. Srinivasraj said that association officials had recently met Chief Minister Joseph Vijay. During the meeting, they held detailed discussions on the development of cricket in Tamil Nadu, the hosting of international matches, and future requirements. He noted that currently, the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium at Chepauk is the only international cricket stadium in Tamil Nadu where Test, ODI, and T20 International matches are hosted.
Srinivasraj stated that the Chepauk Stadium has a seating capacity of approximately 36,000, which is considered insufficient for major international matches and events like the IPL given the current demand. With the growing enthusiasm for cricket and the need to accommodate large crowds, the state requires another modern stadium. Consequently, the request was made to the Chief Minister to build a new international cricket stadium with a capacity of 50,000 spectators.
He mentioned that Chief Minister Joseph Vijay listened to the proposal seriously and asked the TNCA to prepare a detailed project report. The association will now formulate a comprehensive plan considering factors such as potential locations, land requirements, infrastructure, costs, and other technical aspects. Following this, the process of taking the project forward with the state government will commence.
The TNCA President stated that if this project materializes, Chennai will join the ranks of major cities in the country that boast two international-standard cricket stadiums. This would not only facilitate the hosting of international matches but also enhance the capacity to organize major tournaments, IPL games, and domestic cricket competitions. Furthermore, it would enable the provision of world-class facilities for both players and spectators. He also shared important details regarding the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL). Srinivasraj announced that the 10th edition of the TNPL will commence on August 4. This year, the tournament will be hosted exclusively in Chennai and Dindigul. However, there are plans to expand it to other cities across the state in the future to further popularize cricket in various parts of Tamil Nadu and provide local talent with opportunities to showcase their skills.
He noted that the TNPL has played a pivotal role in elevating Tamil Nadu cricket to new heights over the past few years. The league has provided a platform for numerous young players who subsequently demonstrated their talent in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and went on to represent the Indian national cricket team. The TNPL is no longer merely a domestic league; it has evolved into a robust pathway for talented players to reach the national stage.
Srinivasraj remarked that there is no shortage of cricketing talent in the state’s smaller towns and districts. Hosting the TNPL across various cities would give local players the chance to play on home turf and boost public interest in the sport. This would strengthen the foundation of the game and offer emerging talent better opportunities to come to the fore.
He also emphasized that developing superior infrastructure is the need of the hour, given the demands of modern cricket. The construction of a new international stadium would increase the number of major sporting events hosted in Tamil Nadu, benefit tourism and the local economy, and further solidify the state’s identity as a premier sports hub.
Cricket experts also believe that a second international stadium in Chennai would yield long-term benefits for Indian cricket. Having more than one world-class venue available during major tournaments would facilitate match organization and create a better environment for both practice and competition.
Currently, the TNCA is working on preparing a detailed project report. If the state government grants approval, Chennai could soon get a new, modern international cricket stadium with a seating capacity of 50,000 spectators. Meanwhile, cricket enthusiasts also have their eyes on the 10th edition of the TNPL, starting on August 4, which will once again provide a major platform for the state’s young players to showcase their talent.
