Himachal: Patients get relief from new cancer unit in Nahan hospital

Himachal Pradesh: Cancer patients of Dr YS Parmar Medical College and Hospital, Nahan will soon have access to better treatment facilities with the establishment of a new four-bed day-care unit in the isolation ward. Set up in collaboration with the National Health Mission (NHM), this dedicated unit will provide chemotherapy, treatment and medicines free of cost to the patients. Till now, cancer treatment and chemotherapy sessions were conducted in the medicine ward, where space constraints often caused inconvenience to both patients and staff. Given this challenge, the hospital management decided to create a separate facility to ensure smooth treatment. The new unit is expected to be fully operational in the next three to four months. Recently, a team from the NHM visited the hospital to review cancer care services and recommended further strengthening of the facilities. Subsequently, the newly created section will be equipped with modern machinery and advanced medical aid, which is expected to reduce the burden on the existing wards.
The medical college has been functioning from its old building itself, as the construction of the new complex has been stalled for years. Due to lack of space, several departments, including medicine, gynaecology, oncology, dentistry and ENT, are overcrowded. The hospital’s OPD receives an average of 1,200 patients daily. Patients also come from neighbouring districts and states, adding to the pressure. Despite these challenges, the hospital administration is constantly striving to improve services. Principal Dr SS Dogra confirmed that a new four-bed hospital for cancer patients has been set up and will be operational soon. He admitted that lack of adequate infrastructure remains a hurdle, but assured that every effort is being made to provide quality healthcare. The initiative is expected to bring much relief to cancer patients in the area, many of whom have had to grapple with limited facilities till now.
