Himachal: Panchayati Raj institutions involved to prevent drug abuse

Himachal Pradesh: The Government has formally involved Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) in the fight against rising drug abuse in the State. The Panchayati Raj Department has appointed “Master Trainers” to train and empower PRI representatives to curb the growing problem of drug abuse in the State. Speaking at a workshop on the role of PRIs in combating drug and substance abuse at Raj Bhawan today, Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla said that PRIs have a key role to play in combating this evil. He said that as the closest representatives of the people, these institutions have the unique ability to understand, influence and support those affected by drug abuse. “PRI representatives need to have zero tolerance in cases of drug abuse, especially against those who supply it. They should not ignore it for considerations like votes,” he said. He said the problem has assumed serious proportions and is destroying our values ​​and families.

Shukla reminded the Government of its commitment to start de-addiction and rehabilitation centres. Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Aniruddh Singh said that drug abuse was snatching away the dreams of the youth and the representatives of the Panchayati Raj Institutions could play a big role in curbing drug abuse by conducting awareness campaigns, street plays, etc. “Youth clubs, recreation clubs and sports should be encouraged to keep the young children and youth engaged and monitoring has to be strengthened at the village level,” he said. Secretary of Panchayati Raj Department Rajesh Sharma elaborated on the initiatives and programmes being undertaken by the department to tackle the problem. “The police and administration are taking action against those involved in drug abuse, but unless the Panchayati Raj Institutions are involved in the campaign, meaningful results cannot be expected,” he said.
