Himachal: Licenses of 1,379 people cancelled for drunk driving
Himachal Pradesh: Himachal Pradesh Police under the guidance of DGP Atul Verma today launched a special drive against drunk driving in the state. The drive will continue till September 29. The initiative comes after a steep rise in road accidents during late evening hours, especially between 9 pm and 11.30 pm. Additional SP (traffic tourism and railways) Narveer Rathore said the police have carefully analysed road accident and traffic enforcement data, which has revealed an alarming rise in drunk driving-related incidents. “This year alone, the police have recommended suspension or cancellation of 2,345 driving licences for serious rule violations, including 1,379 licences for drunk driving,” he said.
Meanwhile, the police have recommended suspension of licences of 1,379 offenders for drunk driving. The licences have been forwarded to the competent authorities for necessary action. Shimla has the highest number of offenders at 288, followed by Solan (210), Kinnaur (139), Chamba (127), Bilaspur and Kangra (113 each), Baddi (107), Mandi (96), Kullu (70), Una (35), Sirmaur (32), Hamirpur (30), Nurpur (12) and Lahaul and Spiti (7). Similarly, licences of 515 offenders for over-speeding offence and 362 for using mobile phones while driving have been sent to the competent authorities.
Rathore said, “Himachal Police is committed to use advanced technology to effectively regulate and enforce motor vehicle laws. The police headquarters in Shimla is closely monitoring the road safety enforcement plan and has directed the field personnel to make maximum use of digital tools for traffic enforcement.” He added, “We urge all drivers to give priority to safety and refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol. Violators should be ready to say goodbye to their licences.”
