Himachal: Headmistress turns waste into treasure, fosters scientific curiosity

Himachal Pradesh: Mamta Gupta, Principal of Government High School, Kanah, near Solan, is an epitome of innovation and environmental conservation. With a teaching career spanning 29 years, she has relentlessly focused on enhancing education and creating environmental awareness among school children. Her remarkable efforts were recently recognised when Rajesh Dharmani, Minister of Technical Education, Town and Country Planning, felicitated her on Republic Day for setting up the state’s first science park at Government High School, Khararahatti. Recalling her stint at GHS Khararahatti, Mamta explained how she aimed to develop scientific curiosity in students. On reaching the school in December 2021, she observed that mathematics and science instilled fear in students. Determined to make these subjects interesting, she reviewed the curriculum of classes VI to X and identified topics that could spark interest.

In six months, Mamta transformed discarded wooden furniture and other waste materials into living models depicting geometry formulas, science concepts like the solar system, and probability and formulas for common gases like methane and ethane. These models were displayed on the school’s vacant grounds, which became the state’s first science park. The bright and colourful displays attracted students in their free time, helping them learn effortlessly. Mamta also built a bird house out of waste material, which attracted birds and encouraged students to take care of them by providing food and water. To further improve the school’s environment, Mamta planted saplings in painted dustbins, adding greenery to the drab campus. With limited resources, she often funded these projects from her own pocket. Her dedication inspired the school management committee to contribute Rs 100 every month for the school’s needs.

Mamta’s environmental initiatives extended beyond the campus. She encouraged students to plant and care for saplings during vacations, and rewarded those who planted the healthiest saplings. Additionally, she promoted reading by prompting students to write summaries of books on handmade cards, with the best entries receiving prizes. “I love teaching and participate in all activities from planting saplings to making models,” said Mamta. “The students, who are fast learners, emulate these efforts and display their creativity, bringing laurels to the school.” Her innovative approach has created a nurturing environment where students excel academically and develop a sense of responsibility towards nature. Apart from education, Mamta advocates the holistic development of students. She emphasizes on staying away from drugs, being a compassionate person and contributing to environmental conservation. Her passion and commitment have transformed not only the school campus but also the lives of her students, making her a true role model in education.
