Himachal: Fruit growers asked to adopt climate-friendly techniques

Himachal Pradesh: The Horticulture Department has urged fruit growers to adopt climate-resilient technologies and scientific methods to avoid losses. Given the erratic weather patterns over the past few years, the department wants fruit growers to gradually shift to low-chill apple and other fruit varieties that have performed well in changing climates. Furthermore, the department also wants growers to diversify into superfruits like blueberries, avocados, and dragon fruit, wherever possible. Horticulture Director Vinay Singh says, “Unpredictable weather conditions are adversely affecting the production, quality, and productivity of horticultural crops. The Horticulture Department, in collaboration with scientists and experts, is continuously making efforts to promote climate-resilient technologies and raise awareness among farmers.” He says it is crucial for farmers to actively and positively participate in these initiatives so that the benefits of scientific efforts can reach the grassroots level. He adds, “This will help make the state’s horticulture sector more resilient to future climate challenges.” This year, the state experienced no snowfall in January and February, but did experience snowfall in March and April. Subsequently, continuous rain from May to September affected horticultural activities across the region. And now, in early October, snowfall is occurring in higher elevations and temperatures have dropped significantly. Such significant changes in weather patterns are being attributed to global climate change. The Director urged farmers and gardeners to contact their nearest Horticulture Extension Officer, Horticulture Development Officer, subject matter expert, or Deputy Director of Horticulture for technical guidance and solutions to climate-related problems.
