Manipur. Big news has come out from Manipur, which has been facing violence for the last several months. The Manipur High Court on Thursday ordered the deletion of the paragraph from the judgment given in March 2023 in which the state government was asked to consider including the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list. Let us tell you that this decision is considered to be the catalyst for the beginning of large-scale violence between the Kuki and Meitei communities in Manipur. Let us know what the court has said in its order on Thursday.
In the para of the decision last year, it was said that the State Government will consider the request of the petitioners for inclusion of Meitei/Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe list expeditiously, if possible within a period of four weeks from the date of receipt of the order. . The Manipur High Court on Thursday said that this para is contrary to the stand taken by the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court in the matter. Last year’s decision had sought to delete the controversial paragraph directing the state government to expeditiously consider putting the Meitei community in the ST list.
Justice Gaifulshilu of the Manipur High Court, in his February 21 judgment, stressed the need to remove the said directive, pointing to the procedure laid down by the Government of India for amending the Scheduled Tribe list. Justice Gaifulshilu said that accordingly, the direction given in para no. 17(iii) needs to be deleted and order is accordingly made to delete para no. 17(iii) of the judgment and order dated March 27, 2023.
