Governor visits Himachal Emporium.

Himachal: On the occasion of National Handloom Day, Himachal Pradesh Governor Kavinder Gupta visited the Himachal Emporium in New Delhi on Friday. During the visit, he viewed locally produced handloom and handicraft items from Himachal and purchased some of them. He appealed to the citizens to buy at least one handloom product to encourage India’s weavers and artisans.

The Governor stated that the country’s traditional arts and handicrafts are not merely a source of employment but are also a vital part of India’s rich cultural heritage and diversity. Through their hard work, skill, and creativity, weavers and artisans have kept the nation’s traditions and culture alive for generations. Therefore, it is the responsibility of every citizen to promote locally produced goods.

Kavinder Gupta extended his best wishes to weavers, artisans, and everyone associated with the handloom sector across the country on National Handloom Day. He remarked that India’s identity is shaped by its diverse cultures, traditions, and arts, and handloom is an integral part of this heritage. Weavers across different parts of the country create items using their traditional knowledge and skills that reflect local culture and history.

Promoting ‘Vocal for Local’ through purchases

During his visit to the Himachal Emporium, the Governor inspected products crafted by local artisans and weavers. He appreciated the quality and traditional designs of the items. By purchasing handloom and handicraft products himself, he conveyed a message to the public to embrace local goods.

He noted that when consumers buy locally produced goods, the direct benefits reach the weavers, artisans, and their families. This strengthens traditional industries and inspires the younger generation to engage with these professions.

The Governor urged people to prioritize local and handloom products for festivals, special occasions, and daily needs. He emphasized that even a small purchasing decision can contribute to strengthening the livelihood of an artisan’s family. Preserving Cultural Heritage Across Generations

Kavinder Gupta stated that India’s weavers and artisans have passed down their skills to subsequent generations for centuries. Skills related to traditional weaving, embroidery, wool work, and other handicrafts form part of the country’s intangible cultural heritage. Preserving these traditions in the modern era is challenging; therefore, both society and the government need to collaborate to encourage artisans.

He noted that the creativity and hard work of weavers have earned Indian handicrafts recognition not only within the country but globally as well. By linking traditional craftsmanship with modern markets, the income and employment opportunities for artisans can be enhanced.

Emphasis on Promoting Himachali Products

Handicraft and handloom products from various regions of the state are available at the Himachal Emporium in New Delhi. During the Governor’s visit, attention was also drawn to the unique features and market potential of Himachali products. Himachal’s traditional art is distinguished by its woolen products, shawls, caps, embroidery, and other handmade items.

The Governor stated that products made by Himachali artisans should be provided with better platforms in both national and international markets. This would generate local employment opportunities and strengthen the rural economy.

He added that there is immense potential to integrate the handloom and handicraft sectors with tourism. If tourists visiting Himachal purchase local handicraft and handloom products, the state’s artisans can derive direct economic benefits. Furthermore, through tourists, Himachal’s traditional art can reach other parts of the country.

Need to Engage the Youth

The Governor also emphasized connecting the younger generation with traditional handicrafts. He remarked that the handloom sector could be given a new direction through the use of technology and modern designs. If youth are trained and engaged in areas such as design, marketing, e-commerce, and modern production techniques, new markets could be created for traditional craftsmanship.

The role of digital platforms in the handloom sector is also steadily increasing. Artisans can reach customers across different parts of the country through online platforms. This can help reduce dependence on middlemen and increase the potential for artisans to secure better prices.

A Key Sector Linked to ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’

Linking the handloom and handicraft sector to the spirit of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India), the Governor stated that promoting local products strengthens the national economy. This sector serves as a vital source of employment not only for large industries but also for small artisans, rural households, and self-help groups.

He emphasized that the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative should not be limited to mere slogans; people need to prioritize local products in their behavior and purchasing habits. If millions of citizens regularly purchase local and handloom products, it will have a direct, positive impact on the livelihoods of the lakhs of families associated with this sector.

The Governor’s visit to the Himachal Emporium on National Handloom Day reinforced the message that while preserving the country’s traditional craftsmanship is essential, it is equally important to connect it with modern markets.
