Mapusa: FC Tuem registered a hard-fought 1-0 win over Vintage 73 Sports Club to be crowned GFA-Vedanta Women Football Champions played under floodlights at the Duler Stadium here.
The most important goal for the winners came in the 72nd minute, where a cross from Aniela Barreto was brilliantly connected to by Alisha Tavares, who took a touch off the gloves of Vintage 73 SC custodian Jocelyn D’Souza and headed into the goal.
A few minutes later, Namita Govekar’s hard grounder was blocked by the Vintage 73 SC goalkeeper for a corner.
In the first season, Vintage 73 SC Eves had better possession of the ball and made repeated attacks on the opposition goal. Aroshi Govekar’s attempt at a bargain was saved by FC Tuam custodian Riya Rajesh.
FC Tuam walked away with a cash prize of Rs 15,0000 and a trophy as winners, while Vintage 73 SC had to settle for a cash prize of Rs 90,000 as runners-up.
Sesa Football Association took third place. At the awards ceremony, Saptesh Sardesai, CEO Value Added Business, Vedanta Sesa Goa; Dr Caton Fernandes, President of Goa Football Association (GFA); Bicholim constituency MLA Dr. Chandrakant Shetty spoke.
Leena Werenkar, Head CSR & SCDF – Vedanta Sesa Goa was also present; Jonathan D’Souza, Vice President, GFA and member of the GFA Bardez Executive Committee.
Stadium manager Anthony Lobo made the comparison and Rocky Mamole offered a vote of thanks.
