Gearing up to challenge the BJP and Congress, 14 parties sound a battle cry.

Dehradun. Political activities have started intensifying in Uttarakhand before the assembly elections to be held in the year 2027. Efforts have started to prepare a new political alternative to the Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress in the state. In the ‘Manthan 2027-Political option of Uttarakhand through regional unity’ program organized in Dehradun on Sunday on the call of Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD), various regional parties discussed the possibilities of contesting the elections unitedly. During the program, 14 parties indicated to move towards forming a separate alliance. This initiative is being considered an important development in the politics of Uttarakhand. Political experts believe that if regional parties come together on one platform and enter the electoral fray, then a new challenge may arise before both BJP and Congress in the upcoming assembly elections.

14 parties have announced to fight the elections unitedly.

The main objective of the Manthan program organized in Dehradun was to bring the regional political parties of the state on one platform and consider the possibilities of preparing a common strategy for the upcoming assembly elections. In this program organized on the initiative of Uttarakhand Kranti Dal, emphasis was laid on regional unity and creating an independent political option for the state.

During the program, 14 parties expressed their desire to form a separate alliance. However, information about the final decision regarding the formal formation of the alliance, its name, leadership and seat distribution has not been revealed yet.

From the political point of view, this initiative is also considered important because the main election contest has been taking place between BJP and Congress in Uttarakhand for a long time. In such a situation, a possible alliance of regional parties may try to emerge as a third option in the electoral politics of the state.

Uttarakhand Kranti Dal took command of regional unity

Uttarakhand Kranti Dal is a political organization with a historical identity in the regional politics of the state. This party has also played an important role in the movement related to the demand for a separate Uttarakhand state.

However, after the formation of the state, Uttarakhand Kranti Dal could not achieve the expected success in electoral politics. Despite this, his political activism on regional issues has continued.

Now before the 2027 assembly elections, UKD has taken the initiative to unite the regional parties. Through this, the party is trying to create such a political platform in the state, which can bring local problems and issues related to Uttarakhand at the center of the election debate.

Challenge may arise before BJP and Congress

Till now BJP and Congress have had major influence in the politics of Uttarakhand. In the 2022 assembly elections, BJP formed the government for the second consecutive time by winning 47 seats in the 70-member assembly, while Congress won 19 seats.

However, the circumstances of the upcoming elections may be different. Due to the unity of regional parties, the contest in some assembly constituencies is likely to become triangular.

Political analysts believe that if regional parties field strong candidates in their areas of influence, they can affect the vote equation of BJP and Congress.

However, it is also clear that merely forming an alliance does not ensure electoral success. For this, it will be necessary to gain strong organization, effective leadership, common election program and trust of voters.

Local issues may get priority

Migration, unemployment, education, health, road connectivity and lack of basic facilities in hilly areas have long been important issues in the politics of Uttarakhand.

Apart from this, issues like protection from natural disasters, environmental protection, employment for local youth and balanced development of hilly areas also remain in political discussion.

A possible alliance of regional parties may make these issues a major part of their election agenda. Especially in the hilly assembly constituencies, efforts can be made to reach out to voters through politics focused on local problems.

However, detailed details of which issues were formally agreed upon in the brainstorming program are yet to be revealed.

The real test will be on seat distribution and leadership.

According to political experts, the biggest challenge before the regional parties will be to maintain mutual coordination. Different political parties have their own priorities, organizational structure and regional influence.

In such a situation, in case of formation of an alliance, it will be important to reach consensus regarding seat distribution, candidate selection and leadership.

There are total 70 seats in Uttarakhand Assembly. If 14 parties decide to contest the elections together, they will have to decide which party will contest in which constituency.

Along with this, determination of common manifesto, election campaign strategy and organizational responsibilities will also be necessary. Consensus on these topics will determine the strength of the potential alliance.

Election equations may change in hilly areas

Questions related to local problems and development have special importance in the hilly areas of Uttarakhand. Problems like lack of employment and migration have been part of the political discourse in many areas.

If regional parties raise these issues effectively, they can try to gain the support of voters in certain areas.

However, a real assessment of the possibility of changing the electoral equation will be required after the formal formation of the alliance, candidates and election campaign status are clear.
