New Delhi: Germany’s former World Cup-winning defender Andreas Brehm died on Tuesday at the age of 63 due to cardiac arrest. German legend Brehme scores the match-winning penalty against Argentina in the 1990 FIFA World Cup final in Rome, Italy.
The defender has played a total of 86 matches for his national team, where he managed to cross the line eight times. He managed to win club titles with teams such as Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga and Inter Milan in Serie A, before retiring from playing in 1998.
The German player also won the UEFA Cup in 1991 while playing for Italian club Inter Milan.
German club Bayern Munich expressed condolences to Brehme’s family on social media following his death.
“FC Bayern is deeply shocked by the sudden death of Andreas Brehme. The German record champion is in mourning together with his relatives and friends. We will always keep Andreas Brehme in our hearts – as a world champion and even more. An extremely special person. He will always be part of the FC Bayern family. Rest in peace, dear Andy!” The German side wrote on X.
Inter Milan called Brehme “forever a legend” on social media.
The Italian club wrote on X, “A brilliant player, a true interista. Ciao Andy, forever a legend.”
Brehme also won the Bundesliga title with Kaiserslautern.
“FCK mourns the passing of Andreas Brehm. He wore the Red Devils jersey for a total of ten years and became German champion and cup winner with FCK. In 1990 he led the German national team to the World Cup title with his penalty and ultimately the World Cup”. “The FCK family is deeply saddened and its thoughts are with the relatives and friends of Andy Brabham,” Kaiserslautern said in a statement.
