Mallepally: Five boys drowned in a pond in Kadapa district when they went to play in the water, a police official said on Wednesday. “All the boys were relatives and were in the age group of 10 to 15 years, they went to play in the pond at Mallepally village in Brahmamagri Matham mandal around 3 pm on Tuesday,” said Madukuru sub-divisional police officer Rajendra Prasad. They were playing in the pond. It is only waist deep up to a distance of 200 metres from the shore. But suddenly it becomes 12 to 13 feet deep. “When they went there they found it difficult to swim,” Prasad told PTI, explaining the boys’ death.
Later, the children’s family members realised that it had been a long time since the boys had gone out and they started looking for them. Prasad said that on reaching the pond, they found their children’s clothes but there was no trace of them, following which they searched in the pond. After a search, the bodies of the boys were recovered around 11 pm on Tuesday night. According to the police, the children had gone to their grandmother’s place for summer vacation. Meanwhile, Prasad said a case has been registered and their post-mortem is expected to be completed today.
