First India-made 28-90nm chip will be introduced this year: Vaishnav

New Delhi New Delhi: IT and Electronics Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday announced that the first Made in India semiconductor chip of 28-90 nm will be introduced this year.
Addressing the CII annual business summit here, the minister said: “We targeted a particular segment using a targeted approach, which has 60 per cent market share. “Today we have six units under construction. In the context of semiconductor manufacturing, smaller nanometre (nm) measurements reflect more compact transistor designs, allowing manufacturers to fit more transistors on a single chip. 28-90 nm chips are used in automotive, telecom, power and trains.
Underlining the importance of the manufacturing sector, the minister said: “Many top economists want us to focus on services. Both manufacturing and services are equally important for the next level of growth. We must grow our work wherever we find the opportunity. We must have our own IP, products, designs and standards.”

“Our passenger carrying capacity has also increased substantially. We have reached a level where dreams are being fulfilled and goals are being achieved,” Vaishnaw said. We are moving in a stable direction in railways, and more industries should join in.” The Railway Minister further said that the country’s experiment of bringing startups in the railway sector has proved to be very successful.
