Fighting in Pune’s Yerwada Central Jail, dozens of prisoners injured

Pune (IANS) | At least a dozen inmates were injured in a sudden scuffle at the historic Yerwada Central Jail (YCJ) on Monday. Official sources gave this information here on Tuesday. The scuffle started over a minor issue and soon escalated into a riot-like situation in one of the country’s most famous Central Jails, leaving over a dozen inmates injured.

The jail guards and other inmates soon managed to bring the situation under control and peace returned.

Some prisoners received minor injuries, some others suffered more serious injuries. The seriously injured prisoners are undergoing treatment at the hospital.

The Central Jail authorities lodged a complaint at the nearby Yerwada police station. Police have named around 15 accused involved in the violence.

Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt spent time as a celeb-convict in this jail till his release in February 2016.

Independent activists claim that the prison has a capacity of around 2,500, but it is currently overcrowded with over 6,000 inmates and incidents such as this are common, with fights breaking out even over trivial matters.

Despite repeated attempts, the jail authorities were not available for comment in the matter.
